Complete Guide to Lift and Recline Chairs

Do you need a single motor or a twin motor lift and recline chair? Consider your weight and the safe working load of the chair. Would power back-up be desirable (no getting stuck in the chair if there is a power failure)? Do you have pressure concerns? At Cape Abilities, lift/recline chairs are a main product for us, and we’ve helped countless users choose the best chair for their needs.

Lift/ recline chairs

You may think all tilt recline chairs are the same but they come with a variety of options. The important thing is to consider your personal needs and prioritise from there. If you are purchasing through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or an aged care package, you will almost certainly have an occupational therapist (OT) advising on size and pressure care options..

We offer lift/recline chairs for the basic user in a single or twin motor option, which are hand-made in Perth with a huge array of fabrics and colours available.

A single motor chair, when reclining, will lift up your legs and then recline your back. A twin (dual) motor lift/recline chair allows you to operate the leg raiser and back rest completely independently. These chairs all have battery back-up in case of power failure. This is always worth checking when purchasing a lift/recline chair as they are near-on impossible to get out of safely if you are in the recline position when there is a power failure.

CapeAbilities stocks the Redgum Vittoria Dual Motor lift/recline chair with massage option

If the thought of a massage when you are sitting is appealing, you may consider the Redgum Vittoria Dual Motor lift/recline chair (above) with massage option. It is also available in a heavy duty version for a user weight of up to 220kg. These come in a leather material with a choice of colours (toffee, grey and black).

For any client with more complex postural needs or higher pressure care concerns, we offer the Configura lift/recline tilt-in-space chair with options on height and depth adjustments, lateral support options for improved positioning, three settings for the rise function, removable arm-rest for side transfers and the ability to install own preference of cushion. For an additional cost you can have the Cushionair Alternating Seat Cushion with a pump. This chair enables you to end up with a perfect sized chair for your body shape.

Care chairs

For patients who are less mobile we offer care chairs that can be used to move the patient to another room or maybe outside. For a highly cost-effective option, the Redgum Ultra-Care Chair is a lift recliner but has a lithium battery attached, which means that if the chair is moved outside you are still able to use the lift/recline feature.

For higher postural needs the Configura Advance Mobile Care Chair (below right) comes with standard waterfall backrest but has the option to change the backrest (possibly as needs change) to a fully adjustable cocoon lateral support backrest. This can be a good option for home care use as well as hospitals or nursing facilities. The standard comfort chair (below left) is a good all-rounder.
